Adelaide, Australia: Basket Range, Hahndorf, Mount Lofty, Beerenberg

On Day 5, we  left Kangaroo Island by Ferry, drove to Willow Cottage in the Basket Range. Enroute, visited the Hahndorf, a German town. On day 6 we visited the Mount Lofty, the highest point in the basket range area, and also picked strawberries at the Beerenberg. Finally, tea break at the Hahndorf again, as the apple strudel there is superb!

The next day (Day 5), I was pleasantly greeted by a gorgeous sunrise at Kingscote. Grabbed my camera, and rushed to the glass. The sun rise was happening so quickly, there was no time to find key to unlock the two doors to go out. Hence, this was taken from behind kitchen window glass!!

We checked out of the Kingscote cottage and continued on to the ferry terminal to catch the ferry back to the main land.

Sealink terminal at main land.

Vehicles unloading from the ferry.

On the way to the Adelaide’s Basket Range, we stopped by the Yankalilla Hotel for lunch. I had a laksa, which tasted like some tom yum noodles, it was pretty good, given the rarity of the asian food along the way. In Adelaide city, there is a china town, which we will visit later – maybe they will serve more chinese food there.

Before we move to our Willow Cottage in the mountains, we stopped by the hadndorf, a german town.

Tea break is at the “German Cake shop”, a cafe that has garnered good reviews. The shop also sells German clocks, which are displayed as part of the cafe’s displays and decos.

Interior of the cafe

The apple strudel that made Pei and Siew Li come back for more!

Outer sitting area of the cafe. Note the painstaking efforts to deco n doll up the place to make it German-ly. :p

Outside the cafe. This cafe is found at 2 Pine AvenueHahndorf SA 5245, Australia, if you are keen to know.

More German shops along the way.

This is the Hahndorf  Inn, which serves up good German fare. We will be visiting this place later in the trip, so here’s the photo for now

Finally, we drove and reached the Willow Cottage. It was a little stressful as we got “lost” around the end point. Apparently, the map given to us was a little out, and we were misled into turning into Hunters. After 30min of figuring, we managed to find the place. Thank God!

Here’s the view of the kitchen.

View of the balcony where we oversee the vineyard, and the fruit trees.

Wide angle view of the cottage grounds.

Our living room. We will be living here for 4 days.

Bathroom.

View of the cottage the next morning.

On the way, we passed by many vineyards at the Basket Range, which is part of the Adelaide Hills.

Rows of vines running up and down the hills.

Rolling hills of vineyards.

This morning, we will be visiting Mt Lofty, the highest point in the area. Stopping by to look at an apple tree by the road side.

Finally we arrived at the Mt Lofty visitor centre.

Mount Lofty’s lookout gives panoramic views of the city and the Adelaide plains and foothills.

Adelaide city in the distance. The city centre is pretty well-defined.

After the viewing of Mt Lofty, we head for lunch at the Hahndorf Inn.

View of the Inn from interior.

HB servettes and standard cutlery. We had two main dishes – the “A Taste of Germany platter” and the “Hunter’s Roast”, I think.

Cosy and authentic German atmosphere!

After lunch, we went on to pick strawberries at the Beerenberg Farm.

On your mark, get set, go!

Strawberries ripe for picking!

Juicy and nice in my fingers.

Plots being prepared for a new planting.

After strawberry, we returned to Hahndorf for some little shopping.

Bicycles hanging by the wall as deco.

Two little birds above a signboard.

Birkenstock is here too!

Autumn colours showing up in these vines.

The German Arms is also another good recommended place for a meal.

Soon it was late, we head back to our cottage. Enroute, we saw cattles and sheeps. The cows were so afraid of our approach that they stood there stunned, in line.

The sheep stated at us.

So we decided to shoot something from afar haha… Good night!
