7 Steps to enabling USB Mass Storage in Android 2.x

You will experience a time when you needed to transfer a photo, video or document from the Android phone to your PC. Here’s how you can connect your Android to your phone and use it as a removable drive to do transfer of files from and to the Android device. Essentially, it’s a USB Mass Storage (UMS) type of connection that enables this functionality. I also experienced a time when I had to connect Android devices of different version to the PC, and this post is useful for my own reference, and would like to share with you too.

Enabling USB Mass Storage (UMS) for Android 2.x devices

For Android devices below 3.0 (e.g. Gingerbread 2.x etc):

1. Go to “Settings” and Select “Applications”

2. Select “Development”.

3. Turn on “USB Debugging” by checking it.

4. Go to Home Screen and pull down the top of the screen downwards; tap on “USB Connected” button to transfer files to/fro the Android Device.

5. Tap on “Connect USB storage” button.

6. A confirmation dialog box will appear; tap “OK”.

7.  Use the USB Storage as it is. Remember to disconnect the drive from Computer before disconnecting at the phone. Click on “Disconnect storage from PC” when PC side is disconnected.
